An anticipation guide is used to help students access their prior knowledge about a topic, to guide comprehension and to stimulate interest in material to be read.
1) The teacher previews the material to be read and selects the most significant content or concepts.
2)Write no more than 10 statements which are true or false concerning the important information.
3) Prior to students reading the material, they complete the prereading or column on the left side. This is a student’s self-preassessment.
4) Students read the selected material.
5) After reading the material, students complete the post-column or column on the right side and compare those responses to their pre-column.
The pre-column could be yes/no or true/false or agree/disagree or you could put an “I don’t know” response choice.
The post-column could require the student to locate the page or paragraph as evidence of their choice.
