After reading the book, The Matchbox Diary by Paul Fleischman, students in grades Pre K through grade 2 made their own shoebox diaries in T C Knapp’s library. The story tells of a grandfather getting to know his granddaughter by showing her items he saved in matchboxes. He longed to have a diary of his own but couldn’t read or write. These items tell the story of his harsh life in Italy and his life as an immigrant to America with his family through Ellis Island. His family worked hard together and moved often, wherever the work took them. When his father finally found stable work her grandfather could finally go to school to learn to read a write.
