On December 19, 2014, 35 7th and 8th grade students participated in the Geography Bee. The students were asked questions in the areas of: U.S. Geography, U.S. Cities, Continents, World Geography, and Physical Geography. Edison Middle School would like to congratulate our Championship Round Participants: Third place finisher Nick Forchione, Runner-up Imani Womack and Champion Kevin Echelberry.

Perry Local Schools will be closed, Monday, January 12, 2015, due to inclement weather. Parents/Guardians and students involved in PHS extracurricular activities should check district websites and media outlets for the status of extracurricular events on days when schools are closed. All extracurricular activities (practices, games, and after school activities) for Perry’s elementary buildings, Pfeiffer Intermediate School, and Edison Middle School are cancelled for the day when Perry Local Schools are closed. YCare is closed when Perry Local Schools close for the day. Childcare through the YMCA is offered at the Massillon YMCA, Meyers Lake YMCA, and the Navarre Towpath YMCA when schools are closed.

The Perry High School wrestling team competed at the Beast of the East Tournament (Dec. 19-21) in Newark, Delaware finishing 3rd overall with 136 total points. This tournament is ranked 2nd in the nation for the outstanding competition. The Panthers had five placers for the weekend. Individual placers were Jake Newhouse 2nd, Jose Rodriguez 4th, Matt Carrick 4th, Zac McCualley 5th and Austin Phillips 7th. Next, the wrestling team finished in 2nd place with 192 points at the Medina Invitational tournament held December 28-29 at Medina High School in Ohio. Making the finals for the panthers were Zac McCaulley, Jose Rodriguez, Nick Steed and Austin Phillips. Champions were Jose Rodriguez and Nick Steed with two exciting action packed matches. Rodriguez not only pinned his opponent in his finals match, but was also named MIT outstanding wrestler of the tournament! Other placers were Jason Spencer 6th, Emil Soehenlen 3rd, Brady Durieux 4th, and Matt Carrick 7th place.
Perry High School is very proud of 11 students who passed their Phlebotomy Certification Exam. This continues the 100% pass rate for this exam from the Med Tech Program at PHS. The students are Tyler Anderson, Taylor Baker, Brandon Cordea, Emily Curkendall, Dreama Doran, Alyson Dotson, Brooke Hinchcliff, Jessa Johnson, Chelsey McCauley, Alec McDaniel and Sydney Rossi.
This morning, Friday, December 19th, the #BuddStrong Committee proudly presented a check to Sharon and Randy Budd in the amount of $30,489. Money was raised at a recent benefit dinner and auction. Thank you to all who supported this event by attending, making a donation or both. It was an emotional morning to have our friend here at school to celebrate the last day before break!
The District 9 State Support Team will be holding a presentation on Thursday, March 19th from 6 – 8 PM at R.G. Drage Career Center (map). Dr. Cathy Hamilton will present on high expectations, employment and student success. Parents and educators are encouraged to attend the very informative presentation. On December 12th the students from Mrs. Logan’s kindergarten went on a trip to Pfeiffer Intermediate School that took them around the world. When they arrived at Pfeiffer, they were greeted by Mrs. Casey’s 5th grade honor students. The fifth grade students presented their “Christmas Around the World” project to the kindergarten students. The presentation included facts about the culture, food and traditions of six different countries. The fifth grade students shared interesting facts and even sang holiday songs for the students, showing how other countries celebrate this festive season. Mrs. Logan’s students went home with their “suitcases” filled with cultural items from each country that included flags, ornaments and holiday food. For the third year, both Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Casey said that the trip was a great learning experience for all the students.
The Ethics Bowl Championship was held in Mrs. Daily’s Ethic’s class. Two teams evaluated multiple ethical cases and presented their ethical theories to support their stance. Celebrity judges Principal Conrad, Officer Barrett, Miss Lentz, Mr. Jenkins and Miss Anna Leibler weighed all the evidence presented and rendered the final winner. All students enjoyed the topics of discussion and look forward to the next Ethics Bowl.
