PHS Speech and Debate Qualify 53 to State Contest

Perry Pride 200We are proud to announce that 53 Perry High School students (click here for the list) were honored with state qualifier plaques at the OSDA Little District Tournament held at Perry last Saturday.  Perry also took first place sweepstakes honors at the event; we outscored second place Jackson by over 200 points!  We know that large numbers of qualifiers have become the expectation and the norm for Perry, but this year we shattered any and all previous records of numbers of state qualifiers.  In addition, if we consider the number of schools that competed at Little Districts and divide by the number of qualifying spots that were awarded, it would average out to 12.5 qualifiers per school.  If we exclude Perry, the average would be 9.5 qualifiers per school. As you can see, Perry is an anomaly in our state.  Week in and week out, Perry students are beating the top scholars from the wealthiest and most prestigious schools in the state of Ohio.  Our students have become masters at problem-solving, academic writing, and expressing themselves productively.  These remarkable students and the coaching staff truly embody, “Everything humanly possible.”  We invite you to witness what our kids can do on February 15 and 16 at the NSDA Big District Tournament at GlenOak High School.

PHS Awarded Link Crew Student Resiliency Program Grant

linkcrewPerry High School recently received a $2,500 grant from Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (MHAR) to implement a school resiliency program called Link Crew, which aims to make the transition into high school easier for freshmen by providing the structure for them to receive support and guidance from peers. In support of the program, the non-profit corporation Hayden’s Story: The Hayden Porter Foundation made an additional $3,500 donation to support Link Crew. Hayden’s Story is a foundation that was formed by the family of Hayden Porter, a Perry student who took his own life in January of last year. The mission of Hayden’s Story is to develop solutions and offer support for the prevention of suicide, and the foundation is thereby working closely with Perry High School to implement Link Crew. They hope to eventually bring the same program to other area high schools and to develop scholarship funds for outstanding mentors and counseling resources. (more…)
