Department Expectations

The following expectations apply to all social studies courses available at Perry High School:

  • 80/20 Grade Book – Grades in social studies classes will model an 80/20 split.  The 80% will include assessments (unit tests, quizzes, formal writing assignments, major projects), while the 20% will include points awarded for process (homework, in-class exercises, participation).

  • Test Retakes

    • 9th grade – To aid freshmen in the transition to high school expectations, test retakes will be offered at the teacher’s discretion.  A parent signature is required on the original test and the retake will be administered outside of class time.  Retakes are reserved for extenuating circumstances and are therefore limited in amount.

    • 10th – 12th grade – A policy of no test retakes is established.

  • Late Work

    • 9th grade

      • Late homework will not be accepted, unless it is a result of an excused absence.  After three homework misses/zeros, disciplinary action will be taken (i.e. detention, loss of phone privileges in study hall).

      • Late papers/projects will be accepted up to one week past the due date, with 10% taken off the student’s earned grade.  If no assignment is received within the week, the grade is entered as a zero in the grade book. Credit can only be recovered by completing the assignment during Saturday School.

    • 10th

      • Late homework will not be accepted, unless it is a result of an excused absence.  After three homework misses/zeros, disciplinary action will be taken (i.e. detention, loss of phone privileges in study hall).

      • Late papers/projects will be accepted up to one week past the due date, with 10% taken off the student’s earned grade for each school day the assignment is late.  A maximum of 50% will be taken off for lateness.

    • 11th – 12th

      • Late homework will not be accepted, unless it is a result of an excused absence.

      • Late papers/projects – Late papers/projects are not accepted.  If a student is present at any point during the day an major paper/project is due, he/she is expected to submit his/her work to the teacher the day it is due.

  • Bonus Points – Bonus points will be offered sparingly. They will be recorded in the process points category (20% portion of total grade).
