Growing Our Own Pumpkins

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOur Kindergartners were little farmers as they got to experience how things grow and change with their very own Paper Pumpkin Patch!  On Monday, they cut a seed out of manilla paper and glued it onto a brown piece of paper (the dirt).  This was followed on Tuesday by very carefully cutting all around the edges of a green piece of construction paper to represent the vine.  Wednesday, they glued orange and yellow flowers onto the vine.  These flowers turned into a little green pumpkin that the children had to draw and cut out independently on Thursday.  Friday, after lunch, the children came back to the classroom to find that their Paper Pumpkin Patch magically grew real orange pumpkins!  It was so exciting to watch each child go through the pumpkin patch and pick their very own perfect pumpkin!

The best part was yet to come…the children picked their very own special pumpkin out of the patch, and took it home to decorate!  The pumpkins came back to school on Monday beautifully decorated by each child with paint, stickers, markers, leaves, googly eyes etc.!  What a great experience our Kindergartners had as they watched their pumpkin seed grow into a decorated pumpkin! 2nd Grade Students Earn a Game Board Party

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMrs. Baker’s students earned a game board party last Friday by using Smartypants words.  Each week Mrs. Baker introduces 3-4 challenging vocabulary words such as ancestors, veterinarian, delectable, salivated, etc.  Every time a student uses one of these words correctly, to show they know the meaning in his/her writing or a spoken sentence, they receive a magic word stone to put in the class jar.  Once the jar reaches a certain point a mystery reward is opened.  Not only do the students love this, but many of the parents are even trying to reinforce the use the words at home.  So far this year the class has learned a total of 25 Smartypants words.
