2nd Grade Students Study Landforms

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe second graders created a map using edible candy, crackers & whipping cream to explore the natural landforms of our continent.  After studying the landforms located on the map of North America, it was all hands on.  Students used graham crackers to show our deserts, shredded coconut for the plains/prairies, snowcaps and gumdrops represented the mountain ranges/hills, and blue colored whipping cream with string licorice made up oceans, lakes and rivers.  It was an enjoyable and delicious learning experience! Growing Our Own Pumpkins

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOur Kindergartners were little farmers as they got to experience how things grow and change with their very own Paper Pumpkin Patch!  On Monday, they cut a seed out of manilla paper and glued it onto a brown piece of paper (the dirt).  This was followed on Tuesday by very carefully cutting all around the edges of a green piece of construction paper to represent the vine.  Wednesday, they glued orange and yellow flowers onto the vine.  These flowers turned into a little green pumpkin that the children had to draw and cut out independently on Thursday.  Friday, after lunch, the children came back to the classroom to find that their Paper Pumpkin Patch magically grew real orange pumpkins!  It was so exciting to watch each child go through the pumpkin patch and pick their very own perfect pumpkin!

The best part was yet to come…the children picked their very own special pumpkin out of the patch, and took it home to decorate!  The pumpkins came back to school on Monday beautifully decorated by each child with paint, stickers, markers, leaves, googly eyes etc.!  What a great experience our Kindergartners had as they watched their pumpkin seed grow into a decorated pumpkin!
